Very solid little alt-history novel that not only refutes the old trite saw "it couldn't happen here," but illustrates that "it" (the "it" in question being fascism) can happen anywhere, anytime the vigilance of good people lapses. Well-drawn characters (if somewhat stock; the stolid police inspector, the deceptively bubble-headed upper-class girl, ugly bigoted elites, etc.

Here, Jo Walton posits the most realistic "What if?" I have read about WWII- and sets it in a cracking well written character piece mystery too.

I got up to about page 100, where it was revealed that Walton thinks baronets have hereditary seats in the Lords and suggests that a younger brother would inherit in preference to an older son. Perhaps this is explained later, or is part of the alternate history setting, but it comes off as an American author trying to write a novel with a British setting without doing any research.
